I am standing in the middle of East Canal Street looking straight east. The big building you see is Tuomey Hospital. The traffic light you can see in the middle of the road is the Canal and Main Street intersection.

I took this picture from the lawn of the Sumter County Court House looking to the northwest. You can see Tuomey Hospital on the left and the Holy Comforter Church steeple just right of center. The traffic light you see is the intersection of East Canal Street and North Main Street in Sumter, SC

I took this picture from the corner of Main Street and Canal Street in Sumter, SC. The white building you see is currently a law office. But way back when, it was a furniture store. You are looking to the northeast in this picture.

I am standing on what use to be Canal Street in downtown Sumter, SC but is now Tuomey Hospital property. The picture is looking east with the historic Court House on the right and you can see the very top of the brown County Admin building in the background.

Lenoir Store is located in Horatio, South Carolina or west and north of Sumter. This historic "General Store" is unusual in that it functions perfectly well even though it is historic. Everything from fresh produce, automotive solvents to bread and soda is sold here. This store also serves as the towns US Post Office and has the old fashioned wooden/glass PO Boxes. Lenoir Store is a "Must Visit" location and this history tour!

Lenoir Store has a historic plaque outside. It says: Since before 1808, the Lenoir family have operated a general store at the site of Horatio, S.C. Lenoir's Store is mentioned in the 1808 will of Isaac Lenoir, and later appears on the Mills's 1835 map and McLaurin's 1878 map of Sumter County. The present structure was erected prior to 1878 and is maintained by Lenoir descendants as a traditional country store.

Hanson House - Horatio Community Center Horatio, SC latest census figures show its population to be around 7,000. The Hanson House Community Center must serve as Horatio's meeting hall. The Hanson House sits across the street from Lenoir's General Store. Well kept old building!

This "historic registered" church located on Meeting House Road in Sumter, SC is quite a sight. It really sits here as a monument as I don't think they still have weekly services in this building. There is a graveyard located on the land and it is fenced off. I'd say by looking at the surroundings, you can tour this church but I don't know the days or times. Just a short walk up the road leads to "what I think is" the current day High Hills Baptist Church.

There is a historic marker in front of this church. It says: This church was a leader in the early struggle for liberty…religious and political and was the mother of many churches. Inspired by Dr. Furman. John M. Roberts, Pastor here by 1799 opened Roberts Academy, first Baptist educational institute in the state. Furman Institute followed in 1826 and later the Southern Baptist Seminary. (Kind of badly worded?)

This little park in an out of the way location is quite a surprising visit. With a picnic area and plenty of parking this park has a lot of history about who else? General Thomas Sumter…our city's namesake. In this picture, the monument and Gen. Sumter grave can be seen.
